Dr. John M Harrison
General Orthopaedic Surgeon
Specialising in Hip & Knee, Foot Surgery and Medico-Legal Work
Dr. Harrison is a Sydney born Orthopaedic Surgeon. He was educated at Fort Street Opportunity Class, Observatory Hill and then at The English School, Cairo, finishing at North Sydney Boys High School, Sydney. He studied Medicine at Sydney University from 1962 to 1969 and graduated with Honours degrees in both Science and Medicine, taking a year out from study in 1968 to represent Australia in Water Polo at the Mexico Olympics.
After a short Residency Program in Sydney, he travelled to the United Kingdom and worked and studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, graduating with his Fellowship in General Surgery in 1973. He returned to complete the Orthopaedic Training Scheme in Sydney, obtaining his Fellowship (FRACS Orthopaedic) in 1977.
He pursued his post-graduate studies, largely in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, visiting most of the major centres of joint replacement worldwide, including a long fellowship with Dr Bruce Shepherd, one of Australia's most eminent Orthopaedic Joint Replacement Surgeons, between 1976 and 1986. He is widely experienced in most fields of orthopaedics and has been responsible for representation and education of his colleagues in the field for more than twenty seven years.
He spent twenty years in the Public Hospital System in New South Wales as an Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon and still teaches trainees in the Private Sector.
He is a member of specialty societies where he has held a number of leadership positions, and is a past President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and its political arm (ASOS). He has been awarded Honorary Fellowships of the AMA and Australian College of Sports Physicians for services to those bodies.
In sport he has had numerous ties with sporting teams including cricket, rugby union and rugby league and he still plays water polo. He has been the Team Doctor for the Australian Women's Water Polo Team in the World Titles in 1994 in Rome, and was the Manager and Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Australian Men's Water Polo side at the Athens Olympics in 2004. He was also a Reserve Manager for the Men's Water Polo Team for Beijing in 2008.

Dr. Harrison is now in private practice and lives and works in the Western Suburbs of Sydney. He retains a specialty interest in joint replacement of the hip and knee, knee surgery, knee and trauma surgery and foot and ankle surgery.
